Horizons- layers of soil
Bedrock- the solid rock that forms Earth’s surface
Sand- has the largest particles. 1-2 millimeters (mm)
Clay- has the smallest particles.  They are 1/1000 of a sand particle
Silt- is in between in size

They should also study the layers of soil.

Miss Zelle's Chapter 6 Math Quiz on Wednesday, November 30th

The students in Miss Zelle's class have their Chapter 6 math quiz.
They should study and be able to find the following in a set of data:
  • Frequency- the number of time a response occurs.
  • Cumulative Frequency- the running total of frequencies.
  • Mean- the average of a set of data.  You find the mean by adding up the numbers and dividing by the number of addends.
  • Mode- the number that occurs most often in a set of data.  There may be more than one mode or no mode.
  • Median- the middle number.  Put the numbers in order from least to greatest, then cross them out on each end until you find the number in the middle.  If there are two middle numbers, then find the middle of those numbers.
  • Line Plot- a graph that shows the frequency of data along a line.
  • Range- the difference between the greatest and least numbers in a set of data.
  • Outlier- a value separated from the rest of the data.  (Ages in our class, everyone was 9-10, and Miss Zelle's age was much further, making her an outlier)
  • Scale- a series of numbers placed at fixed or equal distances. Ex: 0-20 or 0-50
  • Interval- is the difference between two numbers on the scale.  Ex: 2's, 5's or 10's
  • Study notes and Study guides
Study guides are due Wednesday and we will review before the quiz!

Miss Zelle's Science Class Tests Soil

Students tested which soil would hold the most water.
They wrote a hypothesis
If I pour 200 milliliters (mL) of water into a cup of soil and sand, then I think _____ will hold the most water because _____________________.
Materials:
200 ml of water     1 cup of soil     1 cup of sand
Measuring cup
Procedure:
1.Slowly pour the water into the sand.  Stop when the water begins to puddle on top.
2.Calculate the amount of water the sand absorbed.
3.Slowly pour the water into the potting soil.  Stop when the water begins to puddle on top.
4.Calculate the amount of water the potting soil absorbed.
Then Students drew conclusions by answering the following questions as a group:
1.Infer where the water that you poured into the potting soil and sand went
2.What do the results of the investigation tell about how the size of particles and spaces in between particles compare in the sand and soil?

Bake Sale Proceeds Go to Water Project

Sappington's Humanitarian
 Lily T.

Lily raised $282.00, in a bake sale, for the Water Project.
Lily organized and carried out this amazing task, with the help of her family and friends. Lily had some baked donations from her fellow classmates, David and Olivia.

Great job, Lily!

What to do with your unwanted or left over halloween candy?

Fourth grade is taking donations for left over or unwanted Halloween candy.  We are going to be using them for our December 7th Buddy Day.  If you want to donate, please send the candy in to your student's homeroom teacher.  Thank you so much!

Miss Zelle and Mrs. Rueschhoff's Buddy Day

We went to the library with our buddy classes.  The fourth grade buddies picked out books to read to their first grade buddies.  When they finished, they made bookmarks together.

Miss Zelle's Science Classes Chapter 6 Lesson 3 Quiz

Miss Zelle's science classes have a quiz this Friday over Chapter 6 Lesson 3.  They should study the terms weathering and erosion, and the physical process that cause them.  They should also know how a sinkhole is formed.

Duct Tape Donations for Peace Ball

This month Sappington students are making our school's peace ball.  We will be working on showing peace the entire month of November.  We are making our peace ball out of colored duct tape.  If you have any left over or unused colored duct tape at home, and want to donate it to our peace ball, it would be greatly appreciated.  If you want to purchase new rolls of colored duct tape, those would be great too!  Please send it to Miss Zelle's room (Room 45)  Thanks!

Chapter 5 Study Guide
A consumer is an animal that eats other living things.

Decomposers are living things that feed on the wastes of animals or on their dead bodies.

Predators eat prey and are on the top of food chains.

A niche is an animal’s role in its habitat, such as the type of food it eats.

Omnivores are animals that eat both producers and consumers.

Producers make their own food, and are eaten by both omnivores and herbivores.

A food web shows multiple overlapping food chains.

An energy pyramid shows the loss of energy in a food chain.

A herbivore eats only plants, and a carnivore eats only meat.

A habitat is an environment that meets the needs of an organism.

A food chain is movement of energy among organisms.

Be able to compare the diets of herbivores and carnivores.

Be able to label the producer, first-level consumer, and the top-level consumer in a food chain.

Be able to explain how top-level consumers depend on plants, and why there are fewer animals on the top-level than on the bottom level.

Study your book, notes, study guide, worksheets, and old quizzes to help you prepare for the test.

Chapter 5 Lesson 2
How living things get their energy
Habitat- is an environment that meets the needs of a living thing.  Ex: insect-rock, tarantula-desert
Niche- is a role, how a living thing interacts with its habitat, such as how it gets its food, or reproduces.  Ex: Cat’s claws and eyes- food, sidewinder- small animals
Food Chain- is the movement of food energy in a sequence of living things.  It starts with producers, consumer, other consumers
Ex: Grass à Rabbit à snake à hawk
Prey- Consumers that are eaten, what is hunted
Predator- Consumer that eats prey, hunters
Food Web- Several Food Chains that overlap.
Study the levels of consumers.
Energy Pyramid - shows how much energy is passes from one living thing to another along a food chain.  90% is used, 10% gets passed on.

Mrs. Pride's Class: Unit 1 Math Test on Tuesday (11/8)

Mrs. Pride's class will have a Unit 1 math test next Tuesday, November 8.  Unit 1 covers chapters 1-4 in the book.  Study guides are coming home today.  Odds are due tomorrow, and the remainder of the study guide is due on Monday.  In addition to study guides, students should review their notes over chapters 1-4, and may visit the Unit 1 Games math folder on my ikeepbookmarks website.

Students will be tested on the following information:

  • Writing numbers in three forms:
    • Standard form
    • Expanded form
    • Word form
  • INCREASING and DECREASING numbers in all three forms
  • Place Value
    • Identify the value of a digit in different place values
  • Using benchmarks to estimate the number of objects
  • Comparing numbers up to the hundred thousands place (use <, >, and = symbols)
  • Ordering numbers: GREATEST to LEAST and LEAST to GREATEST
  • Organizing numbers in a table and using the table to answer questions about a set of data
  • Rounding numbers to a given place value
  • Estimating sums and differences using ROUNDING
  • Adding and subtracting numbers to the hundred thousands place
  • Deciding whether an estimate or exact answer is needed in a word problem
    • Hint: The word "ABOUT" in a word problem means you should estimate
  • Writing expressions and equations based on a story problem, and choosing a variable for the unknown number
  • Solving expressions and equations
  • In and Out Boxes:
    • Find a rule
    • Write the rule as an equation
    • Find missing numbers in the In and Out Box

Mrs. Pride's Class Plays Inferencing Charades

We are beginning our inferencing unit in reading and started today by playing charades. Students had to use background knowledge and partner clues to figure out what their partner was acting out. This is similar to how we will use background knowledge and authors' clues to make inferences while reading.
