Updates for Miss Zelle's class

February 1, 2012
Dear Parents/Guardians,
In math students are learning about multiplication and division.  It is essential that students memorize their math facts in order to be successful in two by three digit multiplication and long division.  We will begin learning two by one, and two by two multiplication next week.
In communication arts, we continue to work in guided reading groups.  We are studying fact and opinion currently.  We will be learning about comparing and contrasting, using context clues, and sequencing of events in the upcoming weeks.  We are also going to begin working on constructed response questions.  Please encourage your students to read every night for 20 minutes!  In writing students just finished up their unit on poetry, and we will begin working on letter writing and constructed response questions.
In science, we are learning about matter and its properties, and the changes in matter.  We are going to be learning about the properties of matter, mixtures and solutions, what matter is made of, the physical changes of matter, and how matter reacts chemically.
As always, thank you for your continued support!  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Pasta for Pennies

Dear Sappington,

We are happy to announce our participation in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 20th Annual Pasta for Pennies 2011-2012 campaign. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society work with schools in Missouri, Illinois, and Arkansas to raise money to fight the battle against leukemia lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma. Last year Sappington Elementary raised over $1900 and this year we are hoping to raise over $2000 to help fight blood cancers. Our campaign runs from February 6-10. If you would like to donate money please do so on the following dates. Thank you to all who participate in this wonderful cause.

Feb. 6- "Give Cancer the Boot" by bringing in a penny and wearing your crazy socks and mismatched shoes.

Feb. 7- "Team Up Against Leukemia" by bringing in a nickel and wearing your favorite sports jersey/t-shirt.

Feb. 8- "Rock for a Cause" by bringing in a dime and wearing a band t-shirt from the 50s, 60s, 70, 80s, 90s, and 00s. If you don’t have a band t-shirt wear a t-shirt featuring your favorite TV or movie character.

Feb. 9- "Put a Cap on Cancer" by bringing in a quarter and wearing your favorite hat.

Feb. 10- "Peace, Love, Cure Cancer" by bringing in any coins or dollars and dress 60s style.
